NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

  • We want to make sure you are protecting your most precious cargo. Sumter residents can signup for free car seat installation program. Residents bring their car seats and the Sumter Fire Department will assist them with the correct install. The next install date is scheduled for May 15 from 11 AM – 1 PM. Installations are by appointment only. Schedule an appointment today by visiting our website www.sumterfiredepartment.com or call the Sumter Fire Department at 803-436-2600.

 

  • Planning Department has released a map of SC DOT traffic volumes for the busiest intersections in Sumter. The top five busiest intersections are:

 

  1. Alice Drive and Broad Street
  2. Broad Street and Bultman Drive
  3. Alice Drive and Liberty Street
  4. Wilson Hall Road and Broad Street
  5. Liberty Street and Wedgefield Highway

  • The seasons may change, but safety is a priority year-round. Now that it's spring, walkers and drivers alike are more apt to be out enjoying the weather and local activities. The City would like to remind everyone to watch your speed and use extra caution in residential areas throughout the city and in neighborhoods surrounding our local schools. We want you to enjoy the spring safely.

 

  • The City of Sumter has begun a two-year process of replacing all water meters, community-wide, which includes residential and businesses. It’s important to note that the City of Sumter water rates are not going up in conjunction with this project.

 

  • Residential City of Sumter water customers will be notified up to 48 hours prior when crews will be in their area to replace meters at their home. Our team will be hanging flyers on their front doors with further instructions. It’s important for residents to know that:
    • installation crews will be clearly identified,
    • installation crews do not need in their homes, and
    • their water will be turned off for up to 1 hour during the replacement process.
  • Business City of Sumter water customers will be handled one-on-one with our installation crews to provide ample time to fit within their more challenging schedules.

 

  • The City does have property maintenance regulations, including codes pertaining to:
    • Unsafe or dilapidated buildings,
    • Junk cars or motor vehicles in yards,
    • Illegal dumping,
    • Accumulation of trash, junk or rubbish,
    • Overgrown lots and yards, and
    • Vacant Property Registry.

  • The City has closed a portion of the surface parking lot at N. Sumter Street and W. Hampton Avenue in the Central Business District, until the completion of the new Hyatt Place Hotel and public parking deck. Over 700 additional public parking spaces are available in parking lots within 2 blocks of that same space.

 

  • The City is replacing or retrofitting 3,136 lighting fixtures and some heating & air units within 30 City facilities with LED technology.
    • Will reduce the City’s energy usage by 23% percent.
    • Will save the City $92,000 per year.
    • Reduce the City’s carbon footprint by 598,698 pounds annually = the carbon reducing performance of over 223 acres of trees.
    • Save on maintenance and other costs associated, by replacing air conditioning and heating units and adding new building control systems.

 

  • We want to remind everyone that the City of Sumter administrative offices will be closed in observance of Good Friday, April 14, 2017. Public safety services and sanitation routes will continue on schedule, throughout the holiday.
