October 2017 Council Highlights

  • City Council held a public hearing to learn more about how residents think the next fiscal year Community Development Block Grant funding should be spent. This funding is made available from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and can be used for range of activities such as housing rehabilitation, code enforcement, acquisition of real property, demolition, infrastructure and public facility improvements, economic development, and social services.

 

  • Council approved the contract to build a new Water Department Building on Harvin Street, across from the Clyburn Transportation Center. This will be a free-standing facility with better drive thru and customer service capabilities. The costs of the new facility are just over 2.1 million dollars.

 

  • Council approved the purchase of new rear load and front load garbage trucks, and a ten item recycling truck, due to age and use, these reinvestments are necessary to assure that our fleet and services remain active and on schedule.

 

  • City Council gave final approval to the Town of Pinewood’s request to have the City-County Planning Commission act as the official planning commission for Pinewood. This is a joint venture that had to be coordinated through both the City and County administrations. Council gave consent to the City-County Planning Commission to perform specific duties, including zoning map amendments, comprehensive plan, site plan and subdivision review and many other matters upon the request by the Town of Pinewood’s Zoning Administrator or designee.

 

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Monday, October 30 at 10 AM we invite you to the rededication ceremony of the newly renovated Alice Drive Fire Station. The station has had extensive renovations to expand the offices and living areas of our firefighters as well as a new roof. Public is invited to help us celebrate.

 

  • Congratulations to Ebenezer Middle School for winning the Sumter Opera House and South Arts Launch Pad Grant. These funds gave the opportunity for one school win a chance in meeting the Opera House’s entertainment act last week, The Malpass Brothers, and to talk to them about their country roots, the music business and pursuing their dreams. This showing is part of an annual program for the youth education at the Sumter Opera House that makes it possible for students to attend or participate in concert programming.

 

  • With the Fall upon us, this also brings to a close a season of water fun at the five spray parks and the aquatics center in Sumter. Join us again next Spring, when the heat starts to rise and the many activities and events build throughout the summer.

 

  • The Sumter Police Department is hosting a “Drug Take Back Day” on Saturday, October 28th from 10-2 at their location on 107. E. Hampton Street. Keep your unwanted or expired prescription pills and patches out of the wrong hands. The Sumter Police Department, in partnership with the DEA, will dispose of them safely at no cost and no questions asked. Please no liquids, creams or sharps.
