The City of Sumter has hired the historic preservation consulting firm WLA Studio to conduct a historic resources survey of historic architecture in the West End, Mason Croft, and Hampton Park neighborhoods. The project area is generally bounded by Broad St. to the north, Shot Pouch Creek and Guignard Dr. to the west, Washington St. to the east, and Council St. and Hudson St. to the south.
The goal of the survey project, funded in part through a Federal Historic Preservation Grant awarded to the City of Sumter by the South Carolina State Department of Archives and History, is to identify and document properties built before 1985 that are potentially eligible for historic designation.
A survey team will begin field work to document properties that fit the established criteria between January 6 and January 10, 2025.
For the duration of the survey, the team will tour survey areas on foot. The survey team will take photographs and collect information from the public right-of-way, The survey team will photograph front and side elevations of each building, and the information collected will focus on each building’s architecture, including building type, architectural style, historic details, exterior materials, and other notable features. Significant landscape features will also be recorded if present.
The survey team will NOT go onto privately owned property during the surveying process.
