Intersection at Pinewood Road and Mccrays Mill Road to See Improvements

SUMTER, SC (April 28, 2017) – The Sumter Urban Area Transportation Study (SUATS) Metropolitan Planning Organization  and the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will be hosting a public information meeting on May 25, 2017 to discuss improvements upcoming to the Pinewood Road and McCray’s Mill Road intersection.

According to a Public Safety Department crash data, an average of 47,900 vehicles enters this intersection per day, with a projected increase to over 63,000 by year 2040. The same study also highlights that this intersection has experienced a 52% increase in accidents. This intersection was placed on the top three priority projects for overall ranking for improvements in SUATS Long Range Transportation Plan adopted in May 2013.

“We invite the public to attend and ask questions,” stated Allan Yu, Project Manager, City of Sumter. “The purpose of the meeting is to inform property owners, drivers, and other interested citizens about the details, so they know what to expect during and after construction.”

The proposed improvements call for the installation of raised medians, additional turning lanes, retiming of traffic signals, among other recommendations to assist with the improvement of traffic circulation and growth.

The public meeting will be held from 5-7 PM in the City Centre, located adjacent to the Sumter Opera House in Downtown Sumter on Thursday, May 25. Ample parking is available in the parking lot behind the facility.

SUATS is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) designated for the urbanized areas of Sumter County. The MPO is the planning organization for the expenditure of Federal and State matching highway funds within the designated areas in the County.
