Out of an abundance of caution with the impending weather, offices of the City of Sumter will be closed on Thursday, August 8th, 2024.

 

City of Sumter sanitation services will run on a delayed schedule on Thursday, August 8th. Continue to place your trash cans on the curb during the usual timeframe of 7 AM – 7 PM. 

Heavy rainfall in the amount of six-eight inches is expected Wednesday evening into Thursday afternoon in addition to sustained winds of 16-20 miles per hour and tropical wind gusts of 39-57 miles per hour. 

With hazardous driving conditions created by wind gusts and flooding, our top priority is ensuring the safety of our employees and citizens.

A Flash Flood Warning issued by the National Weather Service for our county is in place until 3:30 p.m. today.
Make sure your headlights are on, slow down and never drive through flooded areas or maneuver around cones and barriers.

As we prepare for the impending threat from Hurricane Debby, Mayor David Merchant and Police Chief Russell Roark want to share that the safety of our residents is our top priority.
 
Sumter residents need to prepare for wind, rain, power outages, and potentially heavy traffic volumes from evacuees and other inconveniences that may result from the storm.
 
As conditions change, we will keep you updated. For announcements, please follow the City of Sumter's Facebook page or visit the City's website at www.sumtersc.gov. Please know that the City is working hard to keep you informed and safe. If you encounter any hazards or know of someone who may need assistance, please call 9-1-1 immediately.
 
The City also has a limited supply of sand available for those needing protection from potential flooding. There are two locations - 107 E Hampton Ave in Downtown Sumter and 4888 Broad St., across from Shaw Air Force Base. Please bring bags and a shovel and take only what you need for this storm.
