Keep Sumter Clean

2025 Dates: February 3-7, 2025

Sumter residents will soon have the chance to clear out unwanted junk with the City of Sumter's curbside junk removal service, happening February 3-7, 2025. This free service is available exclusively to residential trash “roll cart” customers, and all items must be placed at the curb by  Sunday, February 2, 2025.

“This program gives residents an easy way to dispose of items that are too bulky for regular trash pickup,” said Sumter Mayor David Merchant. “It not only helps keep our neighborhoods clean and safe from hazardous debris but also provides a convenient solution for handling large, unwanted items.”

Residents can place items like furniture, appliances, and mattresses at the curb. However, hazardous materials—including paints, oils, batteries, gasoline, and pesticides—are not permitted. Items should not block roads or storm drains, and all items must be placed within two feet of the street to be eligible for pickup.

Residents are also required to separate their items into five categories for collection:

  1. Cardboard and household trash
  2. Vegetative debris (e.g., bagged leaves, tree stumps)
  3. Construction debris and white goods (e.g., building materials, carpets, appliances)
  4. E-waste (e.g., computers, electronics)
  5. Tires

The City of Sumter has partnered with third-party vendors specializing in large-scale cleanups to ensure efficient collection and disposal. Please note this service is in addition to, not a replacement for, your regular garbage collection.

Some commonly asked questions include:

You must be a current city resident and roll-cart customer. On your City Utility Bill you will see a line under the description column that reads "RR-Rollaway Residential", this means that you are eligible to participate. (If you do not have a billing statement handy, click here to search your address, if your address is on our current sanitation routes, you are eligible to participate)

Yes and No. Different trucks will come to your house to pick up different piles depending upon the separation guidelines in the graphic provided. Once one pile is picked up, that particular truck will not return to your home. For example, if you lay out five (5) tires by your curb and the tire recycling truck picks them up, they will mark your address as complete. If you lay out more tires later that week, the additional tires will NOT be picked up.

If you miss the pick-up window, you will be responsible for disposing of your large items on your own. As residents of Sumter County, all City residents have access to nine (9) recycling centers and the landfill for disposal. The Sumter County Recycling Centers  are open:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Sunday 1:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.
(closed Tuesday and Thursday)

Did you know... per law, hazardous materials must be disposed of by following the Material Safety Data Sheet based on the requirements of each material. Most containers have that info on the label or on their product website. For more information on hazardous waste disposal visit SC DHEC).
