CITY OF SUMTER OFFERING FREE CURBSIDE JUNK REMOVAL FOR RESIDENTS IN FEBRUARY

[SUMTER, SC, January 14, 2025] – Sumter residents will soon have the chance to clear out unwanted junk with the City of Sumter's curbside junk removal service, happening February 3-7, 2025. This free service is available exclusively to residential trash “roll cart” customers, and all items must be placed at the curb by Sunday, February 2, 2025.

“This program gives residents an easy way to dispose of items that are too bulky for regular trash pickup,” said Sumter Mayor David Merchant. “It not only helps keep our neighborhoods clean and safe from hazardous debris but also provides a convenient solution for handling large, unwanted items.”

Residents can place items like furniture, appliances, and mattresses at the curb. However, hazardous materials—including paints, oils, batteries, gasoline, and pesticides—are not permitted. Items should not block roads or storm drains, and all items must be placed within two feet of the street to be eligible for pickup.

To participate, you must be a City of Sumter residential roll cart customer. You can confirm your status by visiting www.sumtersc.gov/keep-sumter-clean.

Residents are also required to separate their items into five categories for collection:

  1. Cardboard and household trash
  2. Vegetative debris (e.g., bagged leaves, tree stumps)
  3. Construction debris and white goods (e.g., building materials, carpets, appliances)
  4. E-waste (e.g., computers, electronics)
  5. Tires

The City of Sumter has partnered with a third-party vendor specializing in large-scale cleanups to ensure efficient collection and disposal. Please note this service is in addition to, not a replacement for, your regular garbage collection.
