City of Sumter Celebrates Renaming of Beloved Greenway: Prisma Health Shot Pouch Greenway

The City of Sumter, Prisma Health and The Toumey Foundation are excited to announce the successful renaming of the iconic Shot Pouch Greenway to the Prisma Health Shot Pouch Greenway, commemorated during a special ceremony held today, Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at Sumter YMCA Trailhead. The event marked a new chapter for one of Sumter’s most cherished outdoor spaces and celebrated its significance as a hub for recreation, wellness, and community connection.

The renaming ceremony featured the unveiling of the new Prisma Health Shot Pouch Greenway signage, inspiring remarks from City of Sumter officials, and Prisma Health and The Tuomey Foundation representatives, as well as a walking tour showcasing recent enhancements to the greenway. The event brought together residents, officials, and stakeholders to reflect on the greenway’s historical value and its vital role in promoting active lifestyles and wellness.

“The greenway has always been a symbol of unity and vitality for Sumter, and this new partnership with Prisma Health and The Tuomey Foundation will help us further our mission to provide spaces that enhance the quality of life for our residents,” stated Mayor David Merchant. “We are excited to continue building a healthier future together.”

The greenway is a 3.1-mile pedestrian trail that connects the city from Dillon Park to the Swan Lake Iris Gardens. The greenway is designed for recreational walking, jogging, and biking. Initial funds for the greenway’s creation came from the 2014 voter-approved referendum to continue Sumter’s Capital Penny Sales Tax. The funds announced today will go towards trail development and educational collateral intended to showcase the unique surroundings of the greenway and encourage a more health-conscious community.

“We are fortunate to have Prisma support our healthcare system,” stated David Merchant, Mayor of the City of Sumter, “this is just one more way to show our citizens and visitors the importance of outdoor recreation. Our city has some phenomenal public parks and gardens, and with Prisma’s assistance, more individuals will be able to benefit from the resources that our Shot Pouch Greenway provides.”

Anthony Jackson, Prisma Health Midlands region CEO added, “At Prisma Health, we are dedicated to more than just expert care within our hospitals and facilities—we’re committed to empowering our community to take charge of their health every day. By partnering with the City of Sumter, we’re bringing opportunities for movement into the heart of our communities, where healthy habits can flourish.”

The Tuomey Foundation was instrumental in making this sponsorship happen. Beth Luebbert, manager at Foundation, said, “Our commitment is that we use funds raised in this community to improve care and quality of life for this community. This is another example of that commitment at work.”

The addition of Prisma Health to the name reflects a partnership dedicated to fostering healthier lifestyles for all Sumter residents and visitors. The Prisma Health Shot Pouch Greenway offers walking, biking, and nature-watching opportunities, serving as a vital space for physical activity and mental well-being. This collaboration underscores the City of Sumter’s commitment to wellness and reinforces the greenway’s role as part of the fabric of our community.
