March 2018 Council Highlights

  • Council approved a general obligation bond that will cover costs from the following projects:
    • Reimbursements of prior expenditures for Alice Drive Fire Station improvements, together with associated furniture, fixtures, equipment and technology infrastructure;
    • New Public Safety Complex, located on Lafayette Boulevard, to include police headquarters and fire headquarters, together with associated furniture, fixtures, equipment and technology infrastructure; 
    • New utility billing department, at the corner of Harvin and Bartlett Street, together with associated furniture, fixtures, equipment and technology infrastructure; 
    • Engineering, design, boring, acquisition and installation of a new fiber loop linking city-owned buildings.

 

  • Council approved a maintenance guarantee for the Woodridge Subdivision, phase 1 lots on Decoy Court and Whitetail Circle, this includes maintenance of roads, water, sewer, curbing and stormwater.

 

  • Council approved the official designation of the Crosswell Neighborhood Association.

 

  • City Council has declared the month of April as Fair Housing Month. Council desires that every citizen be offered the opportunity to live in the home of his or her choice, and a home that is decent, safe and sanitary; hence, the City of Sumter does not discriminate in its housing practices and recognizes this 27th Anniversary of the HOME Program.

  • Grand Opening Weekend to Temple Sinai Jewish History Center is Thursday, May 31st – Saturday, June 2. Official exhibit open to the public the morning of June 2 from 10-11:30 AM. Followed with a 1-5 PM afternoon of special events in the sanctuary, including Mary Burkett, Beloved Children of the Holocaust as well as a lecture and panel discussion.

 

  • We are proud to announce we received a 2018 Palmetto Pride Community Pride Grant for Downtown Sumter. This money will be used to purchase additional trash cans for Central Business District to help keep our growing Downtown clean and litter-free. A condition of the grant is to hold a community clean-up, and that's just what we're doing this Saturday, March 24. Please join us at 10:00 am, sign-in is at the Opera House, and stay as long as you can helping pick up trash around the Downtown area. We'll supply the bags and gloves, and maybe even a doughnut to get you going! Would love to have a great turn-out to show Downtown Sumter some love!

 

  • Also, held in conjunction with the downtown litter cleanup the Sumter Litter Alliance is hosting a Garbage Crawl - Community Clean-Up Challenge this Saturday. We're challenging everyone to get involved. All groups are welcome, large or small. Individuals are welcome, too! We'll pair you up with a team. Bring your family, friends, neighbors, civic group, church group, sports team, fraternity, sorority, HOA, bunko team, knitting club...the list goes on and on! We want everyone to come out and join us. Every little bit helps. Pick up in your neighborhood, local park, in front of your office... anywhere you can. The event is Saturday, March 24, 2018, from 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Groups or members of your group may check-in will be at 8am at the USC Sumter Nettles Building. Groups will receive their clean-up items at check-in. Clean up will take place from 8:30am until 11:30am, and then we'll have a picnic and prizes back at USC at noon.

 

  • Palmetto Tennis Center and the Aquatics Center have announced their upcoming schedules and programs are now open for registration. Everything from swim teams, tennis camps, field trips, CPR classes, both youth and adult activities to birthday party rentals and more.
