Public Advisories October 9

In an effort to keep our Citizens informed on the maintenance and cleanup of the 2015 flood and where we go from here... Here is a daily update for Sumter, SC.

 

  • The boil water advisories have been lifted for the City of Sumter, Oswego and Rembert water systems.

 

  • Friday is the last night of the mandated curfew, 12 Midnight thru 7 AM.

 

  • Sumter School District will open on a two-hour delay on Monday, October 12th.

 

  • Trash update:
    • Regular household and recycling trash services in City of Sumter have been running since Wednesday, October 7th.
    • Yard debris pickup with begin on Monday, October 12th.
    • Storm Debris pickup begins Monday, October 12. Residents need to separate this debris from regular household, recycling and yard debris, into four piles (also see attached):
      1. Construction Debris: Building materials, drywall, lumber, carpet, furniture, mattresses, plumbing.
      2. Household Hazardous Waste: oils, batteries, pesticides, paints, cleaning supplies, compressed gas.
      3. ‘White’ Goods: refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers, air conditioners, stoves, water heaters, dishwashers.
      4. E-waste: televisions, computers, radios, stereos, DVD players, telephones.

 

  • FEMA has opened a Disaster Recovery Center at the Sumter County Civic Center. The center will be staffed by representatives from FEMA to assist area residents impacted by the recent flooding in applying for various financial assistance programs. Hours of Operation are  8 am to 7 pm, until further notice. Residents are also encourage to file online a www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling (800)621-FEMA (3362). Disaster assistance applicants who are deaf or hard of hearing should call (800) 462-7585 (TTY); those who use Video Relay Service may call (800) 621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.

 

  • Anyone representing themselves to area residents as a FEMA subcontractor should have FEMA identification credentials with an identification card that has both a FEMA seal and a code chip similar to those found on Military ID’s. If a Sumter resident encounters someone who claims to represent FEMA but does not have the proper credentials, they are asked to contact their local law enforcement agency.

 

  • If your home or business sustained flood damage, the City/County Planning Department and Building Department have created tips to guide you through the process. Residents and businesses can call the office directly at 803-774-1660 or stop by their office at 12 W. Liberty Street in Sumter, Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm. You can also visit www.sumtersc.gov for additional information and tips.
