Long Range Transportation Plan Approved

Sumter, SC (November 7, 2018) – The SUATS (Sumter Area Transportation Study) Policy Committee, at its meeting on November 5, 2018, approved the 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). The LRTP represents the future transportation vision of the City of Sumter and the urbanized portions of Sumter County.

The LRTP identifies ways the community expects to invest resources to enhance its transportation system. The LRTP addresses all modes of transportation and includes planning for roads, sidewalks, bridges, greenways, bike and pedestrian facilities, freight, aviation, and transit options.

George McGregor, City-County Planning Director said, “the plan is the culmination of an exhaustive public planning process designed to provide recommendations regarding transportation investments, land use, and infrastructure improvements.”

The LRTP is a required local planning element in order to receive federal transportation funding under the FAST Act (Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act), approved by Congress and signed into law in 2015.

The LRTP makes specific recommendations for transportation projects across all modes. For the road networks, focus is placed on four categories: widenings, new locations, corridor improvements and intersections.

With the adoption of the Plan, the Policy Committee will begin evaluation of future projects. Recent SUATS projects include Alice Drive widening and Broad Street corridor enhancements.
