Debris Removal has Begun, Expect Delays
Sumter, SC - Oct. 14, 10 AM - Contractors have started picking up flood debris in the City of Sumter and Sumter County. This service is expected take some time to complete, as contractors will only be able to pick up one type of debris at a time.
Trucks will make several passes to each residence in order to pick up all debris. While we want to assure residents that we will get to you, this process is expected to take several weeks to complete. We ask residents to have patience and please do not try to dispose of the debris on your own, as this debris required to be disposed of separately and should not be taken to the landfill.
If you did not have a chance to separate debris into individual piles, as previously announced, our contractors will separate the piles on the spot, but this will slow the process. To expedite the debris pickup process, residents are still encouraged to separate piles into six types of garbage:
- Regular Household and recycling.
- Yard debris: tree branches, leaves, logs, etc.
- Construction Debris: Building materials, drywall, lumber, carpet, furniture, mattresses, plumbing.
- Household Hazardous Waste: oils, batteries, pesticides, paints, cleaning supplies, compressed gas.
- âWhiteâ Goods: refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers, air conditioners, stoves, water heaters, dishwashers.
- E-waste: televisions, computers, radios, stereos, DVD players, telephones.
Volunteer organizations are in place around Sumter to assist residents with debris separation. Please contact United Way of Sumter, or Dial 2-1-1 from your phone, to ask for assistance.
If you have not done so already, please review and download our graphic describing flood debris and how to separate debris at the street (see reverse side, also available online).
