Mayor Enacts Curfew for Saturday Night
SUMTER, SC (Oct. 8, 2016) â Mayor Joe McElveen out of safety concerns for citizens and visitors in the wake of Hurricane Matthew has enacted a curfew for the City of Sumter from 8 tonight until 7 a.m. Sunday morning.
âFirst and foremost, the safety of the Sumter community is of utmost importance to me and all the government officials I support and represent. Therefore, after careful thought and consideration and after an assessment of the results of the storm, I am initiating a curfew,â McElveen said.
âI am certain that the Sumter community can and will support this initiative in the interest of safety due to the ongoing power outages,â he added.
As of late this afternoon, more than 35,000 residents in the greater Sumter community were without power.
âEmergency officials are continuing to work diligently around the clock to monitor and react at necessary to issues as they arise. I would ask that the community report any concerns to our public safety officials,â McElveen said.
âPray for those devastated by the storm and letâs continue to work to take care of one another.â
