EFFECTS OF HURRICANE MATTHEW FORCE SUMTER TO CANCEL TRIATHLON
SUMTER, SC (October 13, 2016) – Due to the destructive path of Hurricane Matthew and its effect on Sumter, South Carolina, the City of Sumter has announced that the 2016 TriSumter Triathlon event, previously scheduled for this Saturday, October 15, has been cancelled.
“This notice comes with great reluctance and with heavy hearts for those who are facing challenges since Hurricane Matthew,” stated Recreation Director Susan Wild. “The majority of registered participants live in the areas affected by the storm.”
Various issues, arising from route interruptions, personal tragedies and man power constraints, were just a few of the obstacles noted by the City that forced them to cancel the event.
The impact of Hurricane Matthew was widespread throughout SC, NC and GA. Sumter and the surrounding area was one of the hardest hit inland communities in South Carolina, experiencing wind gusts up to 68 mph, which have knocked down trees and affected over 45,000 residents’ access to power.

The TriSumter Triathlon is a USAT sanctioned race held annually in Sumter, South Carolina. The event begins with a 300 yard pool swim in the outdoor heated pool, followed by a 16 mile bike course and a 5K running course throughout the community.
