J. Hemby Smith

Lieutenant J. Hemby Smith has worked with the Sumter Fire Department since beginning his career as a volunteer in 2004. Hemby became a career firefighter in 2006. Lieutenant Smith has obtained the operational ranks of Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Engineer, and Lieutenant. Hemby received the American Legion Firefighter of the Year for 2022. Hemby is also a certified fire instructor in several disciplines. Hemby is a Fire Investigator for the department and a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician. Hemby attained an associate degree from Central Carolina Technical College, an associate and bachelor's Degree from Saint Leo's University, and a master's degree from Troy State University.
Hemby is also a member of the following professional organizations: The International Association of Fire Investigators, South Carolina Society of Fire Service Instructors, and The South Carolina Firefighters Association.
Lieutenant Smith is married to his loving wife Kelley and has two children. He and his family are members of Saint Anne/Saint Jude Catholic Church. His hobbies include fishing, hunting, boating, and the outdoors.
Fun Fact: Hemby's family history with the Sumter Fire Department dates to the 1800s with his name's sake and Great Uncle James Hemby Smith.
